Today in the US alone there are over half a million publicly owned bridges of which over 35% are substandard and of the over half a million bridges as much as 40% to 50% need some type of major repair, major maintenance or replacement. The majority of the steel bridges in the US Interstate Highway system, for example, were constructed post World War II from 1950 to 1980, these aging bridges require maintenance and attention, and, in many cases, replacement.
